19 July 2012 Summary - With the start of the PEDRO initiative last week we have made good progress in assembly of parts for PEDRO Prime as well as the construction of a 3D design. Our CAD Capitan has been hard at work creating in Autodesk Inventor a rendering of our newest addition to the robot family. We are planning on having a three barreled cannon. Our CAD Capitan has also made a hand held prototype. Looks like we're off to a good start!
31 July 2012 Summary - PEDRO Prime has developed nicely in the past week. We will be using extra or older FIRST components like the 8-Slot CRIO and leftover Victors. After assembling the majority of the components required, we have seen the building and painting of our control board and the bulk of the C-channel chassis built. We have a 26x24 base with four wheels we bought from a local hardware store, each with their own CIM motor. With our nearly completed CAD Design we are progressing at a great pace.
12 August 2012 Update - Pedro is looking great!! Our control board is now fully wired, mounted to the chassis, and our wheels and transmissions are mounted. We officially have a rolling chassis. Our next meeting we will see the robot drive on its own and the beginning of the second tier. We need to work out the pneumatic systems still, but overall great progress has been made.
9 September 2012 Update -
To recap our progress: we bought four wheels from the Harbor and Freight store. These will be driven by the gear boxes we
used on Valkyrie. Each has its own CIM motor a grand total of four CIMs. The chassis is made of C Channel with plywood on top.
This first tier harbors the control components, an 8 slot, outdated, CRio, extra power distribution board, 4 Victors we don't
use, a Spike relay, radio, battery, and a Digital Sidecar. Most of it has been wired. The second tier or top is connected to the
Chassis by 6, 8" long, 8020 pieces.
We will also be looking in to buying tinted polycarbonate that will allow for a user to have access by opening up from the front or rear of the robot. This top layer will be where the three barrels are, where the T shirt will shoot out of, will be almost exclusive to pneumatics. We will be using an old FIRST air compressor. This will compress air and send air downstream. A cutoff valve will shut off the compressor when a certain PSI is reached. This attaches to a pressure gauge that will give us a readout of the pressure. After the pressure gauge, it will be sent to this air tank, it has 6 ports that pipe can go in to. 4 that are 1/4" and 2 that are 1/2". It holds two gallons total. The pressure gauge, compressor and such will go to one of these 1/4" ports. We will be using the common FIRST plastic tubing, but it will have a sleeving over it to make it look like braided metal. With another one of these 1/4" ports in the air tank there will be a manual pressure relief valve that can be opened and the system will return to atmospheric pressure (no more pressure). The third 1/4" port will be used to go to a FIRST solenoid and to a piston, that will allow us to change the angle of the barrels. We leave one port open for the possible addition of a tank horn (air horn).
Well through some thought, we came to the conclusion that the 1/4" FIRST plastic tubing will not allow enough air to flow through it to fire the projectile, so we doubled its size to a 1/2". With the two 1/2" ports one will go directly to the solenoid of the middle barrel, the other will have this tee plugged in to it and allow for a total of three 1/2" ports, as seen here. That is the tee we will be using. The two new ports will then be plumbed to their own respective barrel solenoids. Now, solenoids are electronically controlled devices that will open up and allow for air to rush through it, basically, in an attempt to reach atmospheric pressure the air will rush through the opening forcing the projectile out of the barrel. Each solenoid connects to a 1/2" port and then goes to the barrel which allows us to shoot. (See attached for pictures of the solenoids). The problem is we don't use any 1/2" tubing so we are buying this tubing here. All of the pneumatic parts have been ordered and are expected to be here by next week.
Things that still need doing:
1. Cut and attach the aluminum siding.
2. Research and purchase tinted polycarb, attach to front and rear of robot.
3. Wait for all the parts to arrive, plumb (attach) everything and mount to robot.
4. Purchase barrels.
5. Paint and Swagify robot, i.e. LED lights, Spinners on the rims, air horn, paint/anodize metal.
6. Test all components.
7. Go to football game, shoot T-Shirts.
30 September 2012 Update - This week has seen the Team finally getting all of the parts shipped in. We have cut the barrels, and they are ready for paint. We had a slight design problem with the mounting of the barrels, but we believe it is now resolved. The colored polycarbonate has been cut and is now ready to be mounted. There were some issues with the wheels which we now believe to be resolved. We have layed out the pnumatics on the top teir and are soon ready to be mounted to the board. Things are really coming together now.
2 November 2012 Update -
Great News..PEDRO made a "booming" debut on Friday at the Northshore High School Pep Rally as the cheerleaders,
dance team, band, students and faculty gathered to cheer on their Panther Football Team to victory against the
Slidell Tigers. I am happy to report that PEDRO performed very well and the Panthers beat the Tigers 28-21 in
PEDRO launched a total of 20 "Beat Slidell Again" T-Shirts provided by the Cheerleaders and Team Combustion T-shirts. The sound of the roaring launch could be heard over the entire crowd. We were able to fire off shirts throughout the entire pep rally, one about every 2-3 minutes. One shirt sailed clear across the gym and hit the rafters before falling into a crowd of enthusiastic students. Everyone cheered. One T-Shirt blasted off into crowd of football players who all jumped high out of their seats and tussled over the shirt. The NHS administration, Dr. Petersen, Coach Jab, and Mr. Alfonso were quite impressed and really got a kick out of it. Mr. Alfonso actually launched two T-Shirts at the same time into the crowd of excited students. Dr. Petersen asked, "When can we do this again." So, I guess that means PEDRO was a success!
Thanks to all the team members who were present to help and show their support. Special thanks to Raya for a great PEDRO and Team Combustion introduction and to the PEDRO Team: Rachel, Sam, Daniel, Brad, Raya, Mrs. Wendy, and Mr. Alex for working hard and not giving up. Our perseverance and dedication finally paid off!
What a great opportunity this was for us to share our love of Science and Technology with all the students at Northshore High School and to showcase a small portion of the cool things we do as members of Team 1912 Combustion. Hopefully, this demonstration inspired students to think about the importance of a STEM education and all the career opportunities available. Perhaps we have also encouraged a few to join Team 1912.
